What am I supposed to say about Brautigan at this point? His simple lines belie a deep connection to his subjects. He is a charmer, and yet he is occasionally blunt and boyish when trying to describe women or people who aren't white. Or at least the narrators of these short stories are. Is that better or worse than ignoring people that are different from you in the 1960s? I'm not sure. He's certainly never seems mean-spirited. I enjoy his writing style a great deal, and I liked this book.
