For International Mushroom Day: my hand-carved lino block reduction print of a clump of poisonous, Eastern jack-o-lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens) on a hardwood tree stump. The gills of these North American mushrooms are bioluminescent and glow green. My print has a layer of glow-in-the-dark ink so it too glows! The glow is believed to attract nocturnal insects which can then spread spores. 🧵1/2

As described this is my 8” x 10” linocut reduction print of a clump of several Eastern jack-o-lantern mushrooms in yellow-orange with glow-in-the-dark gills against a decaying tree stump with textured bark in grey, brown and black, and ground with dead leaves with green in a corner of the background. The print is signed and numbered by me, Ele Willoughby, 2024.

I had another wonderful day in the forest. The weather was perfect, there were no annoying insects because it's getting colder in the mornings, and of course there were still lots of mushrooms. For here's one of the photos I took yesterday.

The photo shows a single, delicate mushroom growing from a bed of green moss. It has a thin, pale brown stem and a small, convex cap that is creamy white with subtle radial grooves. The background is softly focused and features abstract circles and gentle shades of green, blue and brown, creating a dreamy bokeh effect that emphasises the mushroom as the central subject. The image has a serene, minimalist aesthetic, capturing the fragile elegance of the mushroom in its natural forest habitat.
