Sunday Morning Reading

It’s a Sunday and that means it’s time for Sunday Morning Reading. Fall is beginning its march towards Winter, but the chill in the unusually warm Chicago temperatures this weekend aren’t weather related. Some of that is reflected in today’s selections as well as other topics, some that feed the soul, while others fuel the fires.

It’s tough to watch what’s going on in the streets of some of our cities and towns, and there’s no denying what Ian F. Blair points out That The United Police State of America Has Arrived.

Another Ian, this time Ian Dunt, discusses The Politics of Drawing a Moral Line, sketching a parallel between events in Britain and the Ezra Klein interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates. By the way, I encourage you to listen to that interview. It’s not easy, but nothing is these days.

Chicago’s Neil Steinberg comments that Next, …

The for Sunday 5 October 2025 is:

The poem or story can include the prompt word or be about the prompt word.

@ me, if you like, or just include the tag (to allow people to follow or filter their feeds), or keep your work to yourself - all the options are good as long as you're writing.

I triggered the latch, and carefully pushed against the gnarled, wooden surface. The ancient hinges creaked ominously as the door slowly opened.

I beamed as I gazed about the massive hall beyond. My smile must have been as bright as the room’s gleaming contents, so dazzling I wished I still wore sunglasses.

A mound of golden artefacts, reached almost up to the chamber’s arched ceiling. Littered amongst them were jewels of every possible shape and colour.

All my troubles were over. All the trials had been worth it. I could finally live again.

Then, a flicker of motion caught the corner of my eye. Something raced towards me.

5/10: Antagonist POV: what makes you sad?
Perriad: It’s half sorrow, half anger. So many changes, none for the better. The Guild to which I ‘ve given my life makes nice with the slave-owning, women-oppressing men of the Five Principalities, and entertains their daughters each summer. And that girl Jerya, who I took in against my better judgment… they call her Countess and successive Masters Prime turn sycophant around her. It’s sickening.
