This is a warning!

Make no mistake, what we are currently seeing all over the world, is a fight of fossil oligarchs and surveilance capitalism against democracy and climate action. Europe isn't as united as it seems!

In Germany two parties are taking office, that have helped financing Putins war machine in the past (Northstream 2 etc.). Last year the CDU repeatetly has held meetings with the heritage foundation (project 25)...

By a post of @ueeu I came across the searchengine @MetaGer

As I am still looking around for a good searchengine, and as MetaGer has it's own Mastodon instance, I got interested.

MetaGer says it's a fully privacy focussed search engine, subscription based and located in Germany. It looks a bit like the European šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ counterpart of Kagi.

Does anyone have experience with this searchengine? Should I buy a token and test them?

My ā€œnot a book reviewā€ of Careless People ā€“ the book Facebook doesnā€™t want you to read.

With highlights on Irelandā€™s complicity and the lengths people farmers (as I call them) will go to to appease authoritarian regimes like China.

https://ar.al/2025/03/21/careless-people/

Itā€™s clear from this that Ireland should not be enforcing GDPR (not that they are) and, really, people farmers ā€“ and the business model of people farming in general ā€“ should be banned in the EU.

(Donā€™t hold your breaths.)

In Memoriam: Mark Klein, AT&T Whistleblower Who Revealed NSA Mass Spying

[W]hat Mark told us changed everything. Through his work, Mark had learned that the National Security Agency (NSA) had installed a secret, secure room at AT&Tā€™s central office in San Francisco, called Room 641A. Mark was assigned to connect circuits carrying Internet data to optical ā€œsplittersā€ that sat just outside of the secret NSA room but were hardwired into it. Those splittersā€”as well as similar ones in cities around the U.S.ā€”made a copy of all data going through those circuits and delivered it into the secret room.

Klein provided one of the pre-Snowden disclosures of massive communications surveillance in the United States. I'd included him in an earlier toot from May 2021: https://toot.cat/@dredmorbius/106251396105180975

His story also demonstrates that "surveillance state" and "surveillance capitalism" aren't separate things, but part of the same larger surveillance octopus. ā€¦

A banality just occured to me. I love when that happens. It often signals something important stirring inside. It is that there's no position from which you can see all of the . Donna calls it the god's eye view. Instead, knowledges are "situated" - specific servers from which you see something particular, not everything. It is baked into the protocol. The task now is to unlearn the paradigm of , care for our worlds and build bridges between them.
