I have been reading, for the fourth or fifth time Becoming Duchess Goldblatt by Anonymous.
It’s the story of a woman who, when undergoing personal struggle, created a fictional character on social media and inadvertently built a community around her.
But one of the themes of the book is how in times of personal tragedy, grief, or depression, people treat you as untouchable. Friends you thought were close disappear and relatives go silent. People beat a hasty retreat when they see you coming, “forget” to return a call, stop inviting you out.
“I understood why, sort of. The more I kept losing, the more I kept losing, and nobody wants to catch that disease,” writes Anonymous.
