Sportswashing ahoy:

As tennis (WTA) agrees to be hosted in Saudi Arabia, and the Saudi's deride 'outdated' depictions of their treatment of women, a feminist activist is jailed for eleven (!!) years effectively for wearing dungarees.

Some tennis players are outraged, others are taking the money; if you're taken in by the idea that this will encourage Saudis to reduce its repression of women, it may be time to stop & reflect on reality!

"Chinese Vase with Flowers and Fruits," Giovanna Garzoni, c. 1641.

Garzoni (1600-1670) was known as "The Chaste Giovanna" because of a vow she reportedly made to remain a virgin; perhaps she just wanted to be free of worldly entanglements while working on her art?

is shutting down for funding shortfalls. I can’t think of a more dire canary in the Silicon Valley coal mine than this. We can expect a social fascist turn in the IT industry from here out as the remaining jobs not taken by AI are rationed out to *men only*.

$4m is chump change for infotech capitalists, a few bucks tossed to a pan handler. That they won’t fund anymore isn’t an economic decision, but palpably a policy priority toward a hard social rightward turn.

Nina Burleigh on how Trump's election was driven by "furious backlash against women’s gains":

"The election of Trump in 2016 was many things, but first and foremost, it was a slap in the face to American women. It signaled the end of an era when women and girls could believe, based on statistics about women in the workforce and girls in college, that we were living in an era of progress."

in 2012, I finished this painting of a black rhino and her baby as part of my book about the true diversity of natural behaviors. Black rhinos are an example of a species where single moms are the norm.

Prisons put survivors of sexual assault under the power of rapists who seek out jobs in prisons. Prisons account for almost as many sexual assaults as happen in the rest of the population outside prison, with most of those committed or enabled by prison officials. One prison down...now to abolish the rest

If you're someone who volunteers and works to help survivors or prevent sexual assault, abolishing prisons will dramatically reduce sexual assault.
