📖 Annalee Newitz: Automatic Noodle

I rarely manage to actually read new books - it's quite usual that I'm at least a year behind, catching up on some award season books. This was an exception. I heard @jsnell recommend Automatic Noodle during the most recent @incomparable book club episode and just went and got it straight away. And I'm really glad I did as it was excellent!

Four robots are rebooted in a flooding restaurant that used to be their workplace but has been abandoned by the shady owners. They decide to take over the running of the restaurant themselves and start to serve proper food instead of the crap they were forced to do before.

This is the simplistic, surface level description of the book, but it's also so much more than that. It is a story about a post war world, trauma, love, …

Voin suositella.

Last week I spent in bed having a common cold and reading Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Silver Nitrate. Curses, friendship, nazi occultism and old Mexican horror movies in 90's Mexico City. The plot flowed nicely and I liked the supernatural elements and how the aesthetics of old horror movies was incorporated in the story. I always enjoy Silvia Moreno-Garcia's books (this was the third I've read). Can recommend.

Has anyone come across books that have text in the page's margins? I'm not talking about footnotes, but text in the side and upper margins, text that possibly also goes sideways? I'm looking for books as reference to a writing project that I have. I'm also interested in fiction books directed at adults, that include pictures, images, or photographs that are integral part of the story and not just for fun.

Osako joku suositella kirjoja, joissa tekstiä on marginaaleissa?

📖 Emily St. John Mandel: The Glass Hotel

Our bookclub decided on a two book theme for our next meeting and we are reading two Emily St. John Mandel books: The Glass Hotel and The Sea of Tranquility. The latter I've read couple years ago (although I'm going to reread it now) but the first one I had never read. So that is what I did after all the Hugo reading.

This is a strange book and it took me a long while to decide if it was a good or bad thing but by the end of it it definitely fell on the positive side. Mandel is a master of juggling many interlocking stories and jumps in time. This could have been so confusing and frustrating to read but it always made sense and I always knew who and when we are talking about.

Vincent is …

Sometimes I wonder if I'm too harsh with my book ratings. Other times I read something like this and then see people giving it five stars.

Opinions are personal and all that but SURELY having such poor taste should have some repercussions?!

🤝 Äänikirjoja kuunnellessa teen käsitöitä, joten niitä on tullut ilmeisesti tehtyä.

Boons read and listened to in May! Ship of Magic was such a hurdle that I spent over a month on it, but I listened to a bunch audiobooks to cover that up. Nothing was DNF'd this month thanks to my skillful curator. 🤝 I listen to audiobooks while crafting, so it seems I've done plenty of them.

I've gotten a bit bored of the same-ness of thrillers and romance books so decided to try expand my listening to sci-fi with an author and story I don't really care that much about. Experiment was a success, so now I have a whole new genre of audio books to explore!

I've never read anything from Corey before and wasn't much impressed with the series based on The Expanse, but it was generic and light enough to work in audio format.

(Light in the way that it wasn't heavy in detail, can't imagine listening to A Memory Called Empire, for example, without wanting to tear my hair out for not remembering all the details that are important to understand the story.)

There were some details that I missed and that I wished I could glance back to recheck, but nothing that made it difficult to understand the …

I'm really lagging with The Mad Ship because it just hasn't caught my interest! I've heard multiple people say that they like the series better than The Farseer trilogy but I'm not getting it. 😅

I'm about halfway through, so it's easy enough to win me over still.

Minikirja-arviot

Sarjakuvia -lukuhaasteeseen.

Upea!
