has categorically failed to turn for Microsoft 365 (a product line that makes at least $15 billion of revenue a year) into a meaningful revenue driver, with “between 0.1% and 1% of the 440 million existing users of Microsoft 365...paying for the new features" according to an equity analyst's estimation. The Information reports this is because of bugs with the software, as well as "most people [not finding] it valuable right now."’

3 Mile Island Unit 1 is a 50-year-old, out of date, dangerous, poorly designed, power plant. It hasn't generated electricity for 5 years. The only way can afford to restart the reactor and use its electricity is if it is not paying the full costs of the risk of operating it, the cost of decommissioning it, the cost of dealing with the nuclear waste, and the risk of accidents. Who is going to pay for those costs? The public.

Ich habe in den letzten Tagen auf einen Hinweis aus der Community hin mal ein bisschen recherchiert und mir den jüngsten zwischen und in den näher angeschaut, der hierzulande öffentlich weitestgehend unbemerkt geblieben ist. In the wake of Microsoft signing a *20-year contract* to use a decrepit nuclear power plant to fuel AI "tools" whose uniform shittiness has brought us all together in a sordid but beautiful moment of rare near-universal consensus, I am re-upping this piece by the inimitable Ted Chiang, which explains (1) why "AI" is not actually AI, (2) why its non-AI-ness means it needs way more resources to operate than anything that might merit designation as an "intelligence" would, and (3) why, for all that power consumption, you still get absolute shit for results.
