I have noticed that Spanish speakers have a tendency to accent the second syllable of Kamala Harris’ first name. There is a linguistic reason for this: in Spanish the normal pattern of stress in any three syllable word (that ends in a vowel) usually lands on the second syllable. When it doesn’t, an accent marker is added: i.e. Málaga
So, a helpful mnemonic: Kámala. #Spanish

I learned today that ‘piola’ is a pejorative in Cuban Spanish. The creator of this TikTok video alluded to ‘piojo’, the Spanish word for ‘lice’. Piola “refers to people who prefer white people as friends” and appears in the glossary of Cartas a mi mamá by acclaimed Afro-Cuban author, poet, and dancer Teresa Cárdenas.
