I put together some of my favorite reads and stories that might have been overlooked from last month, including on Uber’s financials, wider DOGE chaos, and the challenges with Apple’s pivot to India.
Mirroring the dynamics of platforms like #Uber or #Glovo, nurses, healthcare professionals and daycare workers sign up to algorithm-managed apps that connect them to hospitals, medical centres and even households in need of temporary staff. Born into an economy shaped by #GigWork, these apps reproduce many of the same structural problems.
Had an instance where I was denied an Uber ride because of my white cane. Lyft too! I eventually had to use UZURV to get me home. For those not in the know, UZURV is an on demand ride share specifically designed for Disabled people and my city covers the costs of these rides via the Paratransit partnerships with UZURV. I had booked a ride to go from the library to my home. Each time, on each service, the driver pulled up just enough to see me, see my cane, then pull away. Both apps said my trips were canceled. I logged the incident and complained to both Uber and Lyft. I got ride credits from Lyft, which tells me they are well aware this is happening and have some internal mechanism to deal with things like this, which tells me they aren't doing enough. They are doing enough just to make the problem go away. Radio silence from Uber. Not every state has a Paratransit partnership with UZURV and I don't know about other countries, but I think UZURV is a United States only thing. These tech companies need to be held accountable. This has got to end, and not with just giving a user Lyft credits and told to essentially go away. #Uber#Lyft#RightToRide
Lest you think ride share discrimination is limited to those with service dogs, an #Uber driver told me she wouldn't transport me from a hotel to the Las Vegas airport because I am a blind person without sighted assistance. She tried to get a hotel employee to accompany me. I use a white cane. This stuff is real even as we conclude the first quarter of the 21st century. #accessibility#ableism#blind#discrimination#RightToRide

Around the world, Uber is slashing its drivers earnings so it can claim to be profitable.
It’s using tech to find out which drivers are desperate enough to accept lower pay for trips and continuing to fight to make sure they’re contractors, not employees.
Following on from the US case of online terms & conditions stopping a family later suing Disney for wrongful death at one of their resorts, now it seems the T&Cs you sign on using the Uber Ap in the USA will massively curtail your legal rights when your Uber crashes & causes you life transforming injuries.
The gig economy has gone from exploiting its 'employees' to ensuring you have no recourse should using the service lead to injury.
