, : THIS SUNDAY, 2-4:30pm, I'll be at the Great Flatbush Plant Swap, an annual event I co-founded waaay back in 2010! We'll be in front of the Flatbush Food Co-Op, 1415 Cortelyou Road.

I'll be bringing native plants from my garden. And I'll be on-hand to share my experience with gardening for habitat with native plants, as well as general gardening advice and tips.

I used to be sad at how much shade there is in the yard. Now I wish there was more because the plants are so interesting!

I took a pic of the forming flower buds of the Solomon's seals (Polygonatum biflorum) in sun or we wouldn't be able to see them. You'll need to zoom in anyway. 🙂 Wood sedges (Carex blanda) are still in the pots but going anyway.

Chatted with a neighbor from around the block and learned their family is into gardening.

They told me about pumpkins they grew last year (successful!), milkweed they planted, and carrots (small, not what they hoped for). I shared my good results growing carrots in pots.

When they mentioned their husband was into native plants, especially pawpaws, I showed them my small pawpaw sapling. And told them about a local nursery selling pawpaws.

The joys of having a wild garden. I've lived here for more than 12 years, and in that time, the garden has gone from trimmed hedges, mowed down grass, and no flowers to an absolute abundance of life.
By my last count, I have observed over 800 species. I do not count most of the plants as they wouldn't be here if I hadn't planted or sown them.
The biggest breakthrough was when I put in a small pond.
Every year, I make small tweaks and improvements, such as adding rotting wood, piles of twigs and branches, stone dikes, clay cobs, and nesting boxes. This year, I think I'll try to clear a small area and mix in some sand to attract more ground-nesting bees and maybe put in another pond if I can find the space for it.

Is there an English equivalent to the Danish VildMedVilje (WildOnPurpose)?

It’s City Nature Challenge weekend!

All around the world, it’s a call for us to take photos of wild organisms of all kinds from April 25-28, 2025.

Then you upload them to iNaturalist, either via the app or the website and try to get them identified by May 4!

It’s a sort of global census of all wildlife, done by thousands of citizen scientists.

The best part is you can participate anywhere!

I came across this website from one of the articles I posted earlier. Some good stuff!
