Deep into a city, a metropolis where almost everyone disappears, too big, too fast, too unfairly; especially on the hills, on the outskirts, in the favelas of São Paulo. That's where they live, four friends daily lives are difficult, between unemployment, poverty, violence, and drugs; and yet they are artists.

"The latest by British Emma Forrest, Father Figure, is arguably the greatest work of in decades—at least, that’s according to The CJN’s opinion editor, Phoebe Maltz Bovy, who gave a glowing review to the new release on Sept. 29.

But across the pond, the has received a muted reaction. It hasn’t been spotlit in any book fairs; it’s been largely ignored by domestic awards; professional friends who’ve helped promote, and even written forwards for, her past works have largely ignored this one.

What makes this latest book different? It is unmistakably, idiosyncratically Jewish. Combine that with the growing that’s erupted in the United Kingdom since —which culminated in a lethal terror attack in on —and it’s hard for Forrest not to think her apolitical work of

UK Chief Rabbi says the Manchester attack on the synagogue was a result of

"unjustified demonisation of Israel"

1. That is just wrong.

2. It is really evil to conflate the two.

3. Israel FULLY deserves all the criticism it gets for being a war criminal genocidal apartheid violent entity.

“[UK Green Party leader] Zack Polanski condemns weaponisation of Manchester tragedy to attack anti-genocide protesters”

by Ed Sykes in The Canary @thecanary @uk_politics @palestine
@israel @yemen @lebanon

“I think it’s really problematic if someone is trying to weaponise the attack that happened yesterday to try and silence protest in this country against the genocide… They’re separate issues. Of course, we should always look to be respectful. But we need to be clear what this government is doing. They are selling arms to Israel. They are sharing intelligence for an ongoing genocide”

The first ever Lifeboat Saturday in 1891 changed the face of fundraising forever. It happened in response to the worst disaster in RNLI history when in 1886, 27 lifeboatmen from Southport and St Anne's lost their lives while attempting a rescue.

This inspired Lifeboat Saturday, where more than 30,000 people lined the streets of Manchester to watch bands and floats parade through the city, while volunteers collected donations in tins and buckets.

“On my way home in , and just at the end of my street, I tripped and fell. My more unsympathetic or possibly just more realistic friends have said that at my age - 65 - I don’t trip up, I ‘have a fall.’

As it happens I was fine, just a bit grazed and embarrassed, but two lovely ladies stopped, and took some convincing that I was very close to home, and not actually broken. Thank you both.”

In under two days, I've managed to get a collection point filled with donations of shower gel, hand soap, baby wipes and toothpaste for a South Manchester foodbank.

Everyone has been incredibly supportive but it's astonishing that 4.2 million adults and 3 million children are experiencing hygiene poverty here in the UK.

Each item has started at just £1.00 and like any community effort, it starts with people having a conversation. 🫧 🫧 🫧
