> End of penny production has Chicago businesses facing coin shortage https://chicago.suntimes.com/money/2025/12/17/end-penny-us-mint-production-chicago-businesses-coin-shortage

The penny going away per se is not a big deal most likely. It's the inconsistent rounding up or down businesses are doing that may be a nuisance. For local things, for me still, but YMMV.

LET'S GO!!

OK - despite the fact that is *pretty* tight right now, I did a pledgey thing. I don't do pledgey things very often... I think the last thing I pledged was the watch. Which I loved, and so did lots of other folks. So, this means I have incredible taste, and you should definitely do a pledgey thing too. 'What's the difference between an and a ?

Yancey Strickler on the Blog:

‘Creative work done for artistic purposes is thought to exist for reasons above . "Love and honor” is a convenient excuse to not compensate for it, “exposure” too. Creative work for commercial purposes, on the other hand, can be handsomely rewarded. …

The people who make the first kind of work are historically called “fine artists.” The people who make the second kind of work are called “commercial artists.” ….

In recent decades a similar but distinct creative role has emerged: the creator. People who make a living from , selling , and other forms of direct exchange unlocked by the web. Like artists, creators have a lot of freedom in what they do. …

"Economists call it doom spending: a nihilistic spin on retail therapy."

I keep wondering where the trigger is for the detonation. I think it's itself, not or . OpenAI doesn't even make . When OpenAI's cooked books lose their cover, well.....unload your very very quickly.

When a bubble pops up.. whether it's , , or anything else...I keep thinking about how capitalism becomes a master at inventing stories to suck out of . They create facades: companies, startups, funding rounds, and fancy metrics in press releases. Money flows in, hype builds up, a lot of people profit along the way...until the bubble bursts, everyone ruses for the exist, and new narratives sprout to start another round.

In the end, the logic is almost always the same: hype + narrative = fast-moving capital and a bunch of promises that don't hold up in practice. It's not just "bad faith"...it's a mix of greed, FOMO and legitimacy built through media noise. What's striking is how the system reconfigures narratives: when one bubble defaltes, another shiny story quickly appears to restart the cycle.

"Who should pay?"

CW: controversial.

Many men are poor. But women, as a group taken together, are poorer. And this is true in all countries in the world, not just those known for gendered oppression.

If you’re a man who’s interested in having more connection & understanding, I think it's important to consciously know this, “I am richer, in money terms, as a man, than most women are.”
