#RomanSiteSaturday: the #Roman burial chamber of a wealthy family in Cologne-Weiden. The subterranean burial chamber (hypogaeum) dates back to the 2nd century AD. It's considered the best preserved of its kind north of the Alps. It was discovered during construction works in 1843.

#RomanFortThursday: The only surviving draco, a standard of the #Roman cavalry. The dragon's head was mounted on a post with a long and colourful fabric tail. It probably had a device in the opening of the mouth for making a (hissing?) noise. Found in the fort of Niederbieber ... at the Limes, the Roman frontier.

It's one of the best preserved #Roman cities.
The city was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians. In Roman times it became one of the most important cities of Roman North Africa and a major trading post. It was the birthplace of the emperor Septimius Severus.

For #RomanFortThursday let’s go to Qasr Bashir, #Jordan, located 15km northwest of Lejjun. An inscription dates the construction of the Castra Praetorium Mobeni to AD 293-305. It was occupied throughout the 4th and into the 5th century. Umayyad pottery ndicates re-occupation in the 7th century. Qasr Bashir is considered the best-preserved #Roman fort in the Middle East. The 1.5m thick walls still stand several metres high.
