Books that explicitly ask you to solve a mystery. The classic example is the Encyclopedia Brown series, but there are many more out there, ranging from elementary to adult, from pictures to prose, and from short stories to full length books with physical evidence.
Note: This list is NOT for books that are logic/puzzle books that have had a veneer of mystery added to give fun introductions to the puzzles, even though some of those (inappropriately to the list owner's view) use the "solve-it-yourself" term.
(Hint: If it involves careful/tricky math, or if witness statements sound like "John says if Carlos is innocent so is Mark. Anna says John is guilty if Marcos isn't." or "half the gang members always lie, and half always tell the truth" --it is a logic puzzle book and does not belong here.)
