For fiction, it's extremely personal due to my subjective taste. Sometimes a fiction book is a favorite because of something it did beyond just tell a story.
For nonfiction, it's extremely personal due to it being based on my life. These have personally helped shape who I am and how I see the world.
For a non-personal list of books I think everyone could benefit from reading, I have another list for that.
