Wayne Dowler: Russia in 1913 (2012, Northern Illinois University Press) No rating

Dowler's granular treatment of Russia in 1913 demonstrates the Empire's complexity and contradictions. The Revolution four years later was contingent. Although, in Dowler's study, Russia in 1913 was far from the brink of revolution, strong anti-capitalist and anti-democratic currents and the foolishness of the Emperor put it at risk for upheaval when the War rent the social fabric in 1914.
