I did not expect this book to be a GPS guides missile aimed directly at me, an American expat in Europe going through mid-life crisis, but it is, and maybe that’s why my first thought is that it’s a masterpiece. But that would be unfair to some of the prose, which is sublime.

No. 48 of the Modern Library list is finished. This book was originally banned for obscenity for its depictions of sexual desire in the constraints of English society, and so the ban proved the book’s point. The latter half of the book excels. One sees herself in Ursula.
