If you need more joyful, funny, life-affirming sci-fi in your life, I can highly recommend this one. It’s got:
- space mercs
- cool aliens
- psychic cats
I’m going to need to read everything Valdes has ever written, now.
Mostly literary & experimental fiction, and sci-fi.
My memory is terrible. Let’s see if this account helps me remember what I’ve actually read!

The blurb on the back referenced something about the dark days of communism. However, the main character is clearly happy about the revolution — her society supports her art to the extent she can buy her own house… with cash. The book doesn’t really discuss negative experiences of communism at all. While I read the book to learn about people’s inner lives and experiences in the Soviet era, I found it interesting that the publisher almost felt the need to put this ‘disclaimer’ on the back. Felt kinda exegesis-ish.
