Review of 'Future Arctic' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
Edward Struzik's work "Future Arctic", in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest non-fiction books surrounding environment and climate change you could put your hand on, especially for the people that are newly exploring this topic.
The book is centered around the fast transformation of the Arctic, once seen as a cold, barren and unremarkable area, to a strategically valuable region of oil and gas that neigboring major powers are determined to claim. This fast change is mainly due to the climate changed caused by human activities in the circumpolar North.
Struzik focuses on the numerous consequences and impact of the climate change on the geography and ecolology of the Arctic, specifically the animals that live there and are at the risk of Extinction. He even explains how life in the Arctic is all intertwined; the decline in a certain specie results to another specie, which is a bad sign for the 4 million people that live there, including aboriginal people that depend on these animals for survival and utility.
Struzik's objective writing style is one that is really needed when discussing sensitive topics such as the environment. He makes sure to specify the pros and cons of every aspect of the envisioned future Arctic without exaggeration, and reaches concrete conclusions and solutions to manage the Arctic politically, economically and environmentally. In addition, his statistics and scientific informations are detailed and verified by scientists and researchers.
What makes this book trustworthy is that the author is a well educated man that travelled around the numerous regions of the Arctic and actively paricipated in finding solutions to the Arctic issue. He is also a member of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy at Queen’s University. The anecdotes cultivated from his several visits and studies in the circumpolar region makes this book an exciting read as much as it is informational.
