Books add thoughts to an already cluttered mind and still I add to the mess. If I go completely insane, I want to be the smartest nut in the can.

At worst, this is a good introduction to ancient western philosophy, enough to stir interest in some of those old Greek and Roman stories you've managed to catch here and there.

Middle ground for why you might read this is simply for love of history.

I loved it for the above two reasons and because I am a little bit of a book snob, much like the main character, Poggio -a Humanist of the fifteenth century, was. Loved the hunt, the repercussions, the drama with religion and how, compared to when "On The Nature Of Things" was written, the theory of atoms in the mainstream seem to be so very recent.

Not a good choice if this is the first book you've read in years.

Christopher Ingraham: If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now (Hardcover, 2019, Harper) 4 stars

I've got a bias on this and I know it. Worth four and a half stars but in an effort to show non-bias I rounded down rather than up.

Ingraham throws in a good deal of humor while describing those little nuances about small town life, Minnesotans and family. He accurately describes Winter in Minnesota.

He also adds in data, (data is his thing), about large cities versus small towns, commute times, home ownership, politics, guns as just another tool versus guns as a way of life, education and more interesting stuff, (data).

I believe this book is already required reading for Minnesotans, (to avoid the "Well isn't that something" reply when you say you haven't read it), but could also be useful for those outside the state.

He gets extra high marks from me for his shout out to Robert Putnams' book Bowling Alone which I believe should be …

Starts off strong with promise and I was in total agreement with Kellys' views until the third principle of the best way to live. He proposed self-control, (1st & 2nd were become the best version of yourself & virtue).

First 80 pages offered some perspectives that are definitely worth your short reading time. The last sections of this long paper/short book detail building a structured plan that Kelly & company came up with.
