Louis Bayard, Bayard, Louis.: The pale blue eye (2006, HarperCollins Publishers)

From the critically acclaimed author of Mr. Timothy comes an ingenious tale of murder and …

Outstanding

“The Pale Blue Eye” is an outstanding, if flawed, novel that blends historical fiction and mystery.

It's true that the mystery itself is not particularly engaging and it's maybe too easy to predict the outcome. As a consequence, the twists and turns feel rather forced.

So the novel's greatest strength is not its plot but its rich and atmospheric setting, served by an elegant, engaging style, suffused with humour. Some scenes are masterfully written.

Dom Reilly is back. In this follow up to Year of the Rat, Dom helps …

Disappointing

I can't say I enjoyed this one. The main mystery is not really interesting and its resolution is weird. Also, the descriptions, even the trivial ones, are sometimes detailed to the point of being annoying.

Kathrine Taylor: Address Unknown (Paperback, 2001, Washington Square Press)

A rediscovered classic, originally published in 1938 and now an international bestseller. When it first appeared …

Short and effective

This epistolary tale describes how ordinary, even liberal-minded people could be swept by nationalistic and fascist fervor in Nazi Germany. The novel is really short and we don't really have time to know the characters enough to believe in them. Still, it is a classic, an early warning cry about the pernicious changes happening in Germany at the time, well worth the read. Oh, and the ending is perfect.

Bloody and intriguing

As Jame Tyrion puts it, SU:NC is a horror story, an urban fantasy that takes grounded human characters, living grounded human lives and sees them brush up against the fantastic. I'm not familiar with the Sandman series so I didn't know what to expect really. So far, it's really good – creepy, bloody and intriguing like a nightmare where you don't want to wake up.

Lovely and vibrant

A quest by a small blue furry adventurer and his friend set in gorgeous and colorful environments — what's not to like? I can't wait for the rest of this promising mini-series.
