This is the one where an ordinary Earthman called Carmody gets whisked off around the cosmos by a sweepstake prize, is treated to a view of the design and creation of Earth by an alien called Maudsley, and is thrown into an increasingly surreal universe of Earth-probability worlds. If this sounds like The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, it seems I’m far from alone in suggesting this. The planet-building scene in particular - the modern reader is going to say "That's Magrathea!"
