I would NOT have read this book if I'd known the sequel was only coming out in April 2022, in 3 months time. I would have waited till both were out because now I'm cursed to wait for what seems like an eternity to find out how this ends. Thankfully, it's a duology, so I'm at least comforted by the fact I won't be tormented the same way when the second book ends.
But wow, rarely does a character give into the malicious beasts we all have inside of us, keep hidden and try to overcome to be functional members of society. It went well past the point of righteous and justified revenge that would appease us readers as a 'perfect ending' and brings you to a point where your heart can only feel for Alyce and her immense pain.

I am a sap though, so I have all my fingers and toes crossed for a happy ending in the second book.

MILD SPOILER
I wish the ending had been more obviously happy. It ends on a positive hopeful note but I'm a sucker for clear happy endings. After the ending of Malice, I was really holding out for a happy happy ending. I suppose I will just have to suck it up and make up a post ending happy reunion in my head.
Edit ok I rated it 4 initially but couldn't get over the ending. Especially the part where they both had taken other lovers at some point(s) through those 100 years. Was that necessary? Was it just to show more growth? We've seen them grow already. I personally just would've preferred them to have faith in their love and eventual reunion. I mean, Alyce already went through 100 years being celibate, what's another 100 more?
This book made me so goddamn angry. Racism just accepted cause "that's just the way Asian mothers are", lesbian character cheats with a boy, just ugh. No.

I honestly had to check this book hadn't been written by a man a little bit into the book. Also, tw for rape??
I couldn't get very much past the rape bit and gave up on the book, so I can't comment on whatever the ending might have been and how the plot is. The actual writing of the book however, is pretty bad. The characters feel like caricatures and absolute stereotypes. Pity, I was all ready to enjoy a cute defy-the-odds romance.

Maybe it's that I lack substance as a person, but the writing was too... beautifully poetic/perfect? for me to believe that normal everyday people speak and think like that. Do people out there speak that existentially? Maybe its just something that comes with the astronomy and monster hunting territory.
