Wonderful read. Manages to be both a history book as well as a personal story. Polari to most people of my age is either unknown or associated with camp comedians. One thing that comes across strongly and movingly on here is how much this was both a brave statement as well as defense mechanism.

A well-researched, while still very personal, take on this part of the world. Recent events have mad knowing more about the Black Sea a help in understanding why we are where we are. The national myths, and how they are created, by accident or deliberately, and what is filtered out a time goes by, is well described here.
