Just made it to the third story. It actually made me double check what year this book was published. It shockingly parallels some recent events.

Jonathan Lamothe finished reading HEX by Thomas Olde Heuvelt
I had a bit of a hard time getting into this one, but once it got going it was worth it. That said, I think I'm going to step back from the horror genre for a bit. I'll probably return to it when life settles a bit.

problematic but relevant
4 stars
A lot to unpack in this book. The lead character (Winston) has some pretty misogynistic tendencies, and there's not a single female character in the book with any depth whatsoever. This can be explained to some extent by the fact that it was written in the 40s, and that Winston has been subject to psychological manipulation essentially since birth.
Problematic elements aside, this provides an interesting dive into the world of psychological warfare, which remains relevant to this day.

Jonathan Lamothe finished reading Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams (Dirk Gently, #1)
This book took me an embarassingly long time to finish because I started it and then shelved it for months. I'm definitely going to have to re-read the last few chapters to make sense of it, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

A fascinating read

Having spent a third of my life in the (mainstream) Mormon church, this book was a fascinating, yet uncomfortable read. It's astonishing what a person can be made do do if they are convinced that it's God's will.

The tone of this book is interesting. The author makes no attempt to conceal his disdain for Mormonism. Admittedly, there is much worthy of criticism.
If I'd read this book as a believer, I'd have been quick to write this guy off as an anti-Mormon apostate, and probably wouldn't have finished reading.

There has been a recent Hulu series of the same name made based on this book that's been criticized by many Mormons as being "filled with anti-Mormon lies"... so obviously I needed to read it.
I hadn't even finished the first paragraph before I found something I know they'd object to.
This is going to be an interesting read.
