Ray Nayler: The Mountain in the Sea (Hardcover, 2022, MCD) 4 stars

Humankind discovers intelligent life in an octopus species with its own language and culture, and …

many intelligences

4 stars

Impressed by how many types of intelligence and consciousness are woven together in this book. I count at least 9; some characters embody multiple kinds in ways that become clear.

One thread seemed less necessary, and another one was very grim, but worth the payoff. And this is the only cyberpunk cryptid first contact SF I can think of.

Ian McDonald: Hopeland (2023, Doherty Associates, LLC, Tom, Tor Books) 4 stars

A time-traveling, futuristic saga of a family trying to outlast and remake a universe with …

some books can take a long time to read, and that's ok

4 stars

Hard to give this many stars to a book that I got badly stuck in the middle of, more than once. Each of the characters and their stories would hook me, but then it would switch to something else and I'd lose interest.

But in the end it all came together well, and it's got some great themes.
