My partner bought this direct from the author (who is local to us), and I am hugely impressed! The murder mystery itself is good and satisfying but nothing out of the ordinary; the sense of place and characterisation however is outstanding and the real appeal of the book. The hero (Hermione Napier, newly-married wife to a young doctor in 19th century Ballater) is fun and compassionate and determined; the supporting cast vividly realised. There's tremendous humour and heart throughout. Above all it does a fantastic job of evoking the new Aberdeenshire spa town and its surrounding countryside, in shine and (extreme!) rain. Highly recommended to fellow fans of historical murder mysteries, and it's also made me want to visit Ballater as soon as I can!
