"But promise me this: next time the government takes its pickaxe to the NHS, don't just accept what the politicians try to feed you. Think about the toll the job takes on every healthcare professional, at home and at work. Remember they do an absolutely impossible job, to the very best of their abilities. Your time in hospital may well hurt them a lot more than it hurts you."
I'd recommend this to anyone but especially people who belittle the hard work of NHS staff or are in favour of scrapping the NHS.

"If our beliefs tell us one thing, and the needs of real people tell us another, can there be any question of which we should listen to?" THIS IS SUCH A RAW LINE YES QUI-GON!!!
I needed to focus pretty hard to take in the first 30 pages or so but then it became much easier and I really enjoyed it!! The POV changes often but it was easy to follow because it's made clear from the first couple of sentences who the perspective has shifted to. The last 50 pages were insane, I loved it. This was my first Star Wars novel and I'm excited to read more ~

It took a bit longer for me to be invested in the story than I was expecting but I started to enjoy it much more as I continued reading. One thing I liked a lot was that Vietnamese expressions and food names weren't given translation notes or explained in-text, they were just integrated into the story and could be understood with surrounding context.

I wanted to find more books about healthcare as I'm considering finding a job in the NHS, and this was a really eye-opening read. I already had a lot of respect for NHS staff, but this somehow multiplied it by a thousand.
As someone with multiple family members working in the NHS, I'm often vaguely aware of what happens with certain health problems and procedures, but the author helpfully explains how and why, and makes everything much clearer. Her experiences are described in amazing detail and were easy to visualise, even without being personally familiar with what's being described, and were cleverly combined with statistics and medical history.

I'm a little tired of the ~mysterious beautiful perfectly-imperfect fantasy girl~ trope so I guess my enjoyment of this book was kinda doomed from the start, but I was hoping for something more impressive based on other people's reviews.
I don't regret reading it and I didn't want to DNF it but it was just kinda 'meh' for me. Elements of it appealed to me and I was curious to learn about Karou's past, but I didn't care as much about many of the characters or the romance as I wanted to.
Not sure if I want to read the rest of the series, even though I've heard the second book is better than the first.

I love food, and I especially love fusion food. The creativity of making a traditional dish less traditional by incorporating elements of other cultures fascinates me, and Tomorrow's Kitchen was a good exploration of that. The art is amazing and clearly laid out, making the recipes easy to follow. I enjoyed the combination of recipes, personal stories and powerful activist messages, I think it's much more personal than a regular recipe book and an enjoyable read. I'm hoping to try out some of the delicious recipes soon!
