Review of 'The new voices of fantasy' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

This is a book of "new" short fantasy stories ("new" because some of them are actually 5+ years old, so I'm a little unclear what cut-off age was used for the selection). I picked it up because there's a short story by Ursula Vernon, whose books I've been enjoying recently. This short story turned out to be good though a little dark.

Overall I found the selection a bit mixed. There were some excellent stories but also quite a few that just didn't seem to have a satisfactory ending. Leaving the story completely open-ended so the reader has no idea what actually just happened can occasionally be interesting and thought-provoking, but more than once in a collection of just 19 stories is excessive.

Liked most: "The Duck", "The Pauper Prince", "The Haunting of Apollo A7LB". Liked least: "Left the Century to Sit Unmoved", "My Time Among the Bridge Blowers".
