Leo Tolstoy: What Is Art? (Hardcover, 1959, Scholarly Pr)

Marathi translation of the what is art?, English translation by Charles Johnston from Russian.

An interesting take on the definition of art, as seen from a late 19th century perspective. Tolstoy argues that art is the communication of special emotions as the artist felt them, which means anything that does not transmit emotions can't be considered good art. He argues against art schools, against modern art, against Wagner operas, etc. A bit of a dry read at times, but sometimes also refreshingly unconventional and interesting.
