There is something about mercedes lackey books that really causes my heart to wrench when characters die. I'm not going to say it's always because of the depth of the character or even the amount of empathy one has with the character.
I feel like it's something kind of intrinsic to the romantic fantasy genre. That the focus is so squarely on how that death impacts everyone else in the story.
I honestly didn't expect the book to wrap up the way it did. I quite thought the plot of this book could have encompassed the entire trilogy. This first act could have been expanded into a trilogy in it's own right.
Im sad a few characters couldn't stay around for longer. Especially as a few of them are quite legendary for the future Valdemar books ive already read. I would have like to have spent more time with them. …
