Great follow up

5 stars

Where the first book deals entirely with humans and the ways that we interact with each other and ourselves, this book starts to speculate about alien societies in a really interesting way. It's also great to see more angles on Teixcalaan and see how Mahit and Reed are doing after the events of the last book.

Good times

This book does sci-fi in the way I like best. It focuses mostly on sociological/political speculation, addresses contemporary societal issues in a thoughtful and critical way, and doesn't try to explain everything to the reader or get too tied up with details. Plus it's an exciting romp with likeable characters.

Satisfying conclusion

This was a super fun read. Lots of callbacks, the full cast from the series getting to show their strengths, and resolutions to the Big Questions the series poses over the course.

I really appreciated the twists in this one and did not see them coming, even though they made a lot of sense and fit into the story/world well. Really well done book.

World-building ahoy!

This book kind of feels like a bridge/setup for The Empty Grave. I kinda felt like a lot of the plot points were telegraphed a bit too much/Lucy and the team should have figured some things out sooner based on things we learned in the last three books. Some good characters here still, so certainly not a bad read.
