I always thought that was weird.
Burgess had a few recurring obsessions, one of the primary of which was cannibalism. This occurs here and later in 'Earthly Powers' - where we also see a gay main character, by which he may have been trying to undo the drubbing he gave homosexuality here.
Although Ken Toomey is a vapid, self-serving, unpleasant man, it isn't because he's gay but just because he is. And he hated Malta which gives him a pass in my book.
Burgess is very odd when he tries to be funny, because I don't feel he had an ounce of humour in him, just that while he doesn't think he humours, he feels he'd like to try. Perhaps he should have taken up golf.

So it's hardly surprise that it gets such an airing here, although mostly this is AB's "Brave New World" knock-off.
