"A woman and her husband admitted to a hospital to have a baby requests that their nurse be reassigned - they are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is black, to touch their baby. The hospital complies, but the baby later goes into cardiac distress when Ruth is on duty. She hesitates before rushing in to perform CPR. When her indecision ends in tragedy, Ruth finds herself on trial, represented by a white public defender who warns against bringing race into a courtroom. As the two come to develop a truer understanding of each other's lives, they begin to doubt the beliefs they each hold most dear"--Provided by publisher (from OCLC # 952139156).

Review of 'Small great things' on 'Goodreads'

5 stars

I received an advance review copy of Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. It's one of the best books I've read in quite some while. Part courtroom drama and part interracial relations and completely compelling reading. Reading a book in which race plays such a large part is going to push some buttons and get you examining your own thoughts and biases, and I cannot stop thinking about this book. Most of the time it's handled quite sensitively, and during those scenes when I believe the author is a bit heavy-handed on her agenda it's got me wondering if it's because it is tapping into the ugly side of my own psyche. Very worthwhile read.
