Review of 'Twilight of Democracy' on 'Goodreads'

Applebaum theorizes about the current worldwide rise of authoritarianism as nostalgia on the part of many to return to a mostly white, religious, non-muslim, non LGBTQ world, where loyalty is valued above all else. She examines the chilling move towards nationalism in a variety of nations as they attempt to oppress the media, secularism, immigration, and other progressive elements of society. Although nervous making in the extreme, the author doesn't see the demise of democracy as inevitable, and holds out hope for those who champion liberalism and are willing to fight for it.
