“Little Keiths”’ desire to write “this personal obituary” is understandable when you consider how he’s presented it as a study of how a writer writes through his personal relationships with other great writers and especially their deaths. But despite a fine structure and so many great individual essays on the art of writing, Bellow, Hitchens, Larkin and…at last Howard, it comes across as the self-indulgence it clearly is. A tome which, if his surname wasn’t Amis, would have been unlikely to make it past the majority of publishers front desks.
