Entertaining mystery, colorful characters

I started reading this before I realized this series is the basis of the Longmire TV show, and I haven't read the first book (this is the second), so it took me a couple of chapters to get acquainted with the characters, but then it picks up. Despite the pop-fiction angle where every woman he meets up to the lower age range of AARP membership is super attractive and is giving him the eye, the writing is good, with the jaded self-deprecating sherriff reminding me a bit of Len Deighton's cynical middle-aged spy Bernard Samson and also (again a bit like Deighton with his beloved Berlin) immersing the reader in the wintry climate and rugged populace of the author's native Wyoming.
