I have never read a Ben Hope book before, but despite this I do not think that it was necessary to know the complete back story of the characters to enjoy this book. I easily jumped right into the plot and did not find that I was missing anything because of this.
However, while I may not have missed anything from a plot perspective, I found that I did not fully engage with the characters and found it hard to care about a love triangle or the personal live of the protagonist. Don't get me wrong, this a very solid novel and has enough twists to keep you interested. However, it just didn't click with my and I found the various twists unsurprising. When I read a book I usually get so involved with the plot and with the characters that I have a hard time putting it down long enough to get the necessary sleep that all people need. But this time I found that I was easily distracted and just not all that interested with the fate of our hero's.
Now I'm sure that there are many people who will disagree with me and I'm sure that fans of the series will love it and claim that I haven't given it a fair chance. But I always try to give an honest opinion and I'm afraid this just isn't the book for me.
