As he witnesses the hardship and beauty of the outlaw human colony, he learns what it means to struggle with war, ecological disasters, love, and death.
This was slow at the beginning but began to move and develop as the story progressed. By the end, it was quite interesting although the ending itself seemed 'abrupt'. Not one of Greg Bear's best, but very readable.
