This was good and engagingly written. I thought it was fiction when I picked it up, but it’s actually creative nonfiction.
The book follows 3 cases of murdered girls, and I found it a little tricky to keep it all straight. She doesn’t finish talking about one case and start another, it’s all kind of intermixed.
Almada also discusses her own experiences with men - events that I think she sees as close calls. She’s just been lucky enough not to be one of these dead girls.
Once I realized it was nonfiction, I did feel a bit weird. I think the goal is a good one - raising awareness of the casual murder of women, misogyny, the lack of resolution for the cases. But I’m not sure what it accomplished for Almada to ask the family and friends rehash everything that happened.
