Not bad, I liked it, but lacked the emotional impact of the previous book. But better than the fourth.
Once again, I could see the main Withered from miles away. Too many clues. But hey, it's a children's book, not that sophisticated.
John was a lot less edgy, and once more, more ofa whiney teenager than a sociopathic (wanabe) serial killer. Him and being accepted in a group = not a good combination. Story wise, that is.
But the 'villains' were interesting and not too cookie cutter, there was some moral thinkery in the finale and overall, I liked how it ended... but the last saccharine chapter should have been left out. I mean, geez. That's só unlike John, even with character growth.... no, just... no. It was totally unbelievable and out of character. Dan should have cut that last chapter off. It would have …

I'm sad this is the last John Cleaver book. Overall, it was a refreshing and entertaining series. Dan Wells' writing isn't really that good, but it is entertaining and it is slowly getting better.
