When an earthquake causes a rift, an Icelandic lake begin to seep away - and a skeleton tied to some old radio equipment is exposed on the expanding shoreline. A team of detectives tries to find who the dead man is and who killed him. The story delves into the Cold War past when some idealistic Icelanders traveled to East Germany to study and there realized how tarnished their ideals were in the hands of the Stasi. The reader is a jump ahead of the police investigation as some of the story is from the point of view of a participant. In many ways the structure of the book is similar to Silent in the Grave, though for me it was not quite as gripping. Still, this is further proof that Arnaldur Indridason is one of the best crime fiction writers around. He makes it seem so easy!
