Review of 'Now She Is Witch' on 'Storygraph'
4 stars
Lux and her mother dealt in herbs, charms and poisons for townsfolk until they decide her mother is a witch. After buying her mother in the poison garden, Lux finds they now come for her. She is no witch and has no defence against them until Else saves her and takes her north through the woods. Else wants Lux’s help in her revenge against a Lord, though Lux is tempted by a quieter, safer life far from any notions of witchcraft.
It’s a heavy book on the treatment of non-conforming women in a world of folklore, religion and plagues with all the violence that entails. But likewise, the beauty and liberation of independence and witchery. The growing bond between and developing stories of Lux and Else is enchanting and nebulous. There’s a lot said between the lines and chapters which is compelling as the story unravels.
