Russell suggests that we can rebuild AI on a new foundation, according to which machines are designed to be inherently uncertain about the human preferences they are required to satisfy. Such machines would be humble, altruistic, and committed to pursue our objectives, not theirs. This new foundation would allow us to create machines that are provably deferential and provably beneficial. I feel like the author was on his back foot the whole time trying to justify why AI alignment is worth even considering as a problem. Which maybe makes sense, I didn’t find the actual argument (or suggested calls to action) especially compelling.

I have to be honest, I couldn't bring myself to finish this book. While the subject is interesting, and the author needs is one of the leading AI experts, I found the writing tedious at times. I dropped it about three quarters through.
