Underwhelming military sci-fi

I like sci-fi, but I barely was able to finish this book. The characters were one-dimensional and fell into gendered stereotypes, the over-arching mythology didn't really catch my interest, and the writing was distractingly mediocre at times. I'm not sure if I will bother to read the rest of the series.
