Review of 'Harry Harrison' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

This book is a weird hybrid of biography of Harry Harrison and a critical review of his works. Having not read any other books in Twayne's United States Authors Series, I do not know whether this is typical of other books in the series. It's also unusual in that the author of the book, Leon Stover, is a personal friend of Harry Harrison, and bounces between presenting a supposedly objective and critical viewpoint, and presenting personal anecdotes. The author also comes off as dismissive of some of Harrison's political viewpoints without actually making any arguments against them, and I wonder if this is simply an attempt to maintain the appearance of objectivity by disagreeing with Harrison on some things.

These concerns aside, the book presents a decent biography of Harry Harrison, and a reasonable jumping off point for critiquing his work.
