Scott reviewed Cronopios and Famas by Julio Cortázar

I found I had to be a particular mood, open and patient, to read this. Otherwise I became irritated rather quickly. Parts of it were definitely clever, creative and refreshing. It did make me laugh often. The class critique underpinning the Cronopios y Famas section was the highlight for me.
Other parts felt like someone trying to explain the insights of their journey on psychedelics while they were still tripping. Words strung together that didn't make sense and weren't meant to make sense, yet I couldn't find deeper meaning in the constructed nonsense. Perhaps I'm obtuse or perhaps there wasn't one. Likely a combination of both. I suppose surrealist fiction is not for me. Empathy and a tip of the hat to the translator.
