Charlie, having become the de facto leader of the human community in post-Mancopalypse Manchester, is, understandably, frazzled. Monroe, titular leader of the freaky part of town, is in psychological melt-down. Will they recover their equilibrium? Will they have mad passionate sex together? Will they save Manchester from the serial killer in the shadows? Anyone who knows Helen Harper's book can have a good guess at the answers to those questions. The fun is in the getting there, in taking in all the daft decisions and contorted logic that the heroine wafts through, and the equally dumb reactions of all the other characters, and in enjoying the jokes. There seem to be less jokes than there used to be, or maybe I've become desensitized over time. On the other hand, the male lead is less awful than in some of her other books. I rather enjoyed the blood-thirsty mermaid, and wish …
