The peaceful English village of King's Abbot was stunned. First the attractive widow Ferrars died from an overdose of veronal. Not twenty-four hours later, Roger Ackroyd--the man she had planned to marry--was murdered. It was a baffling complex case involving blackmail, suicide, and violent death, a case that taxed all Hercule Poirot's "little grey cells" before he reached one of the most startling conclusions of his fabled career. I wasn't expecting that! And I'm not saying anything else.
It's easy to see how the twist ending of Roger Ackroyd helped set the trope for detective fiction to come, and, thanks to Christie's mastery of her craft, it's still shocking to this day.
Assigned reading in high school. Didn't care for it at the time.
